EU to Allow Use of Universal Port on Smartphones

The European Union is likely to allow the use of a single port or a single universal port on smartphones and other gadgets.

This policy has received strong criticism from Apple, because Apple's smartphone and tablet products, namely the iPhone and iPad, have been using the Lightning port for charging.

Citing Gizhina, Thursday (17/2/2022), the European Union first initiated the approval of the use of universal ports for charging since several years ago. However, the rules were not ready until 2021, after device manufacturers did not agree on a joint technical solution.

Whereas iPhone and Android users have been complaining about having to use a different charger for each device. If the iPhone is charged using a Lightning cable, the Android device is charged using USB Type-C.

According to 2018 statistical data, half of the smartphones used and circulated use a micro USB port, 29 percent use USB Type C, and 21 percent use a Lightning cable.

Now along with the development of technology, it is possible that the statistics above have shifted, where most of the Android cellphones in circulation use the USB Type C port for charging cellphones.

Valid from Smartphone to Tablet and Headphone
According to a member of parliament, Alex Agius Saliba, the results of a vote on this issue could be held in early May. After that, parliament will discuss with each EU member state regarding the rules.

“(The rules) will take effect later this year. That's our intention. You can't just focus on smartphones," he said.

Saliba told Reuters that a deal could be reached by the end of 2022.

According to lawmakers, a single universal port should be available for all gadgets, from e-books, low-power laptops, keyboards, computer mice, headphones, smartwatches, electronic toys, to smartphones, tablets and headphones.

Will Generate Electronic Waste
In addition to issuing a rule on a single universal port, Saliba wants the European Union to harmonize the infrastructure for wireless charging by 2025.

According to him, the rule on a single universal port can take effect six months after the rule is enforced. That's when device manufacturers have to start customizing their devices.

Previously, Apple had said the EU initiative could have a negative impact on innovation and would result in a heap of e-waste if lawmakers forced consumers to switch to new chargers.
